The year 1994 was the time Tonya became a celebrity after her main competitor Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted just prior to the 'National Championship'. Tonya benefited from this recognition and popularity so well that she changed the landscape of female skating. In 2017, a film called "I Tonya" was made to tell the story of her life and achievement.
